Connecting Devices to the Chromeleon Server PC
Connecting Dionex Devices via USB

Follow the instructions below when installing Dionex devices that are equipped with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. You can connect devices directly to the PC, or via a USB hub. For a list of Dionex devices that can be controlled via USB, refer to  Table: Connecting Dionex Devices.

Dionex strongly recommends installing Chromeleon software before connecting any USB devices. Otherwise, Windows will not recognize the device type and will prompt for a driver (cmwdmusb.inf). If this occurs, follow these steps:

  1. Click Cancel in the Windows message box.

  2. Turn off the power to the device and unplug the USB cable from the computer.

  3. Install Chromeleon.

  4. Reconnect the USB cable to the computer and turn on the power to the device. Windows will now automatically recognize the device.

 Note:

If Chromeleon software detects an IC USB device that has not been assigned to a timebase, the USB Auto Configuration Wizard automatically appears. For more information, refer to  Using the USB Auto Configuration Wizard.

Connecting USB Devices Directly to the PC

  1. Plug the "A" connector of a standard USB A-B cable into a USB port on the computer. Plug the "B" connector of the cable into a USB receptacle on the Dionex device.

  2. Repeat Step 1 to install additional USB devices.

The USB device(s) can now be added to a timebase. (For more information, refer to How to: Configuring the Chromeleon Server.)

Connecting USB Devices to a Hub

 Notes:

If the number of USB devices in the system exceeds the number of available USB ports on the PC, the devices must be connected to a USB hub. Many devices (including the ICS-3000, ICS-5000, and some of the UltiMate 3000 modules) contain a built-in hub. Use the built-in hub whenever possible. If there are still not enough USB ports, install an external USB hub. The hub must be compliant with the USB 2.0 specification.

The USB standard limits the USB cable length to 5 m (16 ft). Each device can be separated from the PC by no more than five hubs. Thus, each USB device can be located no more than 30 m (32 yds) from the PC. For complete installation instructions, refer to the documentation provided by the hub vendor.

  1. Plug the "A" connector of a standard USB A-B cable into a port on the USB hub. Plug the "B" connector of the cable into the USB receptacle on the rear panel of the device.

  2. Repeat Step 1 for each additional USB device.

  3. Plug the "A" connector of a USB A-B cable into a USB port on the computer. Plug the "B" connector of the cable into a port on the USB hub.

The USB devices can now be added to a timebase. (For more information, refer to How to: Configuring the Chromeleon Server.)

 Tip:

The UVD-3000 has an RS-232 port, but is connected to the USB port on the PC or to another module of the UltiMate 3000 system via an RS-232/USB interface cable. For installation details, refer to  UVD-3000 UV Detector: Installation.
